Judospace present at IMSPA Seminar

The Judospace Team of Paul Williams and Mike Callan presented at the recent Continuing Professional Development Seminar of the Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, held on 14 April 2011 at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
 
The theme of the presentation was the Organisation and Impact of the Commonwealth Judo Championships. Co-presenters included representatives from the Ryder Cup, Sport Wales, and the Welsh Assembly Government.
 
The event was hosted by Julian Leybourne, himself a former international judo player, the incoming President of the IMSPA Cymru Institute.

EJU Advanced Coach Award welcomes the 50th student

Mr George Grapsas, from the Aris Judo Club, Thesaloniki, Greece became the 50th student to enrol on the European Judo Union Advanced Coach Award. The 50 coaches are present from 11 different nations. The course leads also to the Access Certificate in Sports Coaching - Judo awarded by Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK.
 
The course involves online study of 6 modules in the virtual judo space, followed by an intense 4 day residential block, led by some of europes top coach educators.
 
George will follow a structured education programme for coaches, part of a suite of Awards overseen by the EJU Judo Knowledge Commission. Congratulations to George and to his club, Aris for committing to personal and professional development.

EJU Level 3 Advanced Coach Award gains academic approval in Cambridge

The Judospace Educational Institute is delighted to announce the approval of the Anglia Ruskin University External Accreditation Sub-panel for the European Judo Union Level 3 Advanced Coach Award.

This means that judo coaches who successfully complete the award will also achieve the Access Certificate in Sports Coaching - European Judo Union worth 90 academic credits from the University.

The Proposal Team consisted of;
Mr Envic Galea, EJU General Secretary,
Mr Bob Challis, EJU Judoknowledge Commissioner, and ARU Lecturer in Sports Coaching,
Mr Lance Wicks, EJU Judoknowledge Commissioner, and Judospace IT Director,
Ms Natalie Emmett, Judospace Head of Administration and Quality Manager,
Dr Mike Callan, EJU Judoknowledge Commissioner and Judospace Managing Director.

The detailed written proposal was closely scrutinised by the Accreditation Panel led by the leading sociology academic, Dr Shaun Le Boutillier. They considered issues such as; the rationale for curriculum design and content of programme, the appropriateness of aims and learning outcomes, assessment strategies, student experience, and operational management. The Panel meeting with the Proposal Team then clarified any questions.

Dr Callan, said "We are pleased that the EJU Level 3 Award has gained this academic recognition. This confirms that it is set at the right level and has suitable quality control systems in place. It's great news for coaches who want to progress on to the Level 4 Award, but who previously did not have the qualifications to gain entry to the University."

Mr Challis, who will become the Anglia Ruskin Link Tutor to Judospace said "Anglia Ruskin University is building a great partnership with both the European Judo Union and with Judospace. We were pleased to welcome Envic Galea to the University again and we look forward to continuing to make a significant contribution to the development of judo coaches across the world."

EJU Level 5 Coach graduate Matt Divall leads the England Junior Team to Japan

Following his successful completion of the EJU Level 5 High Performance Coach Award, Matt Divall 3rd dan, was appointed as the Coach for the England Junior Team. He recently returned from a Japan Tour with the players, where they visited Kanoya and Tokyo.
 
The coaching team included Trevor Sitlington, Nigel Donohue and Yuko Nakano. Well done to all of them.

Announcement of the next EJU Advanced Coach Award Residential in Canberra, Australia

The Judospace Educational Institute are pleased to announce that in partnership with the Judo Federation of Australia, a residential assessment block will be held in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport.
 
The 4 day course will run from 26 - 29 September 2011, and will be led by Roy Inman OBE 8th Dan, and Dr Mike Callan 6th Dan. Following on from the highly successful course delivered in 2010. IJF Continental Sports Director for Oceania, Peter Herrmann, described the pair as "The best possible combination to conduct a course of this level." 
 
In the spirit of goodwill and Jita Kyoei the Judo Federation of Australia has opened up the course to any other judoka in Oceania who would like to take advantage of this opportunity.
 
Full board accommodation at the AIS and tuition fees will be 600 AUD.
 
Coaches will need to register on the course online by 10 January 2011 by visiting www.judospace.com There are 6 modules to complete online. The cost of each online module is £68 GBP.

EJU Coach Awards included in British Judo Technical Congress

Dr Mike Callan, 6th dan, European Judo Union Judoknowledge Comissioner was invited to present at the 2010 British Judo Association Technical Congress, on the topic "Developments in International Coach Education". The invitation was at the request of the BJA Technical Director, Colin McIver 8th dan.
 
Dr Callan summarised the suite of currently available coaching awards at levels 3, 4, 5 and 6, and took questions from a knowledgeable  and distinguished audience.
 
The session was introduced by BJA technical Officer Chris Doherty 5th dan, himself a graduate of the EJU Level 5 High Performance Coach Award.

Terry Watt European Masters Champion

Judospace is proud to congratulate Terry Watt on winning his 6th European Masters Championship at the recent EJU Masters Event in Croatia.
Terry is a coach completing the EJU Level 4 Performance Award at Anglia Ruskin, where he is making a valuable contribution to the lively debate and developing even further his skills to contribute to the development of coaching in his native Northern Ireland.

Judo Coach Graduates

The Judospace Educational Institute is proud to announce more graduates from the EJU Level 3 Advanced Coach Award. The coaches, Kelly Fong (AUS), Sue Gardiner (AUS), and John Bennett (AUS), completed six online modules designed to challenge their thinking as a judo coach, and then completed a gruelling 4 day residential experience, under the watchful eye of the EJU and Judospace tutors Roy Inman OBE 8th Dan, and Dr Mike Callan 6th Dan. The residential was held at the AIS in Canberra, Australia, with the support of the Australian Judo Federation and the Australian Sports Commission.
Envic Galea, EJU General Secretary and Chair of the Judoknowledge Commission said "The European Judo Union is proud to present these graduates from our Level 3 Award. They have led the way for generations of judo coaches in the future. Congratulations to them and to their federation."
Peter Herrmann, Performance Director of the Australian Judo Federation said "All involved were very impressed with the content and how the course schedule was presented in both a timely and professional manner. We highly recommend this course."

Judospace Downunder

The Judospace Educational Institute staff have arrived in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport to prepare for the next residential block of the EJU Level 3 Advanced Coach Award, recognised by the IJF and delivered with the support of the Judo Federation of Australia.
The Programme will follow after the OJU Championships which are being held this weekend.
The Judospace delivery team is Roy Inman OBE 8th Dan, and Dr Mike Callan 6th Dan. The students from Australia have been following the six online modules looking at key coaching topics, they will have two days of lectures on each topic both on the mat and in the classroom, then a further two days of intense assessments.
Those that are successful will be the first coaches in the Southern Hemisphere to achieve the Level 3 Advanced Coach Award.
